I Came By follows a political activist and street artist called Toby (1917's George MacKay). At nightfall, Toby breaks into the houses of elite aristocrats, spraying graffiti on the walls to denounce their hypocrisy.

After entering the home of respected judge Hector Blake (Hugh Bonnerville), George discovers a tortured man has been imprisoned in the basement. In a panic, Toby heads home and calls the police, telling them what he found at Blake's home.

When his claims are dismissed, Toby warns his mother Lizzie about what happened, but she refuses to listen. Taking matters into his own hands, Toby heads back to the house to free Blake's prisoner. Shortly after arriving, the insidious judge bludgeons him with a cricket bat.

With Toby is out of the picture, it makes sense that his mother would become the new lead. And since the narrative shifts to Lizzie's perspective at this point, that seems to be case.

But almost immediately after Lizzie becomes the main character, she's killed off! After that, Toby's best friend Jay becomes the third protagonist. Although there aren't many films that change the main character halfway through, I Came By is one of the few to switch it up twice.
