Deadstream centres around disgraced influencer, Shawn Ruddy, who decides to livestream himself at a haunted house, hoping to win back his fans. But when Shawn awakens a demonic spirit, Mildred Pratt, and her ghouls, surviving the night becomes his top priority.

Rather than depicting Shawn as a flawed protagonist, he's perceived as an obnoxious fame-chasing streamer. When it's revealed his online downfall was caused by him hospitalising a homeless man, viewers are desperate to see Shawn get his comeuppance.

And yet, Shawn slowly but surely wins everybody over. He's realistically adaptable, using the cameras around the building to evade danger. Throughout the night, he's clawed, punched, hurled, impaled, and has his gonads chomped on, highlighting his immense pain threshold. He doesn't make excuses for his actions and instead acknowledges his wrongdoings.

In the climax, Shawn performs a ritual to send Mildred back to Hell, which ultimately fails. Realising the ritual requires a blood sacrifice, he chops off his finger and tries again, this time successfully banishing Mildred. 

As Shawn celebrates, he sees the showdown was caught on his livestream, with thousands of viewers cheering him on. This moment is satisfying, not because Shawn has reclaimed his popularity but because his fanbase have witnessed his growth as a human being.

But in the final moments, Mildred's undead forces corner Shawn, giving him no means to escape before the screen cuts to black. Even though Shawn was ready to discard his fame-hungry persona and turn over a new leaf, he never got the chance.
