6. Silly, Silly Aaron - Creep

From Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass, Creep is one, well, creepy b*stard of a movie.

A found-footage affair, director and co-writer Brice plays Aaron, a struggling videographer who takes up the offer to film the dying days of Josef - played by Duplass, who also co-wrote the film - a slightly quirky fella who has a terminal brain tumour and wants to record some memories for his pregnant wife and unborn child.

That quirky behaviour of Josef's soon becomes a little more sinister, when he admits to raping his wife Angela, hides Aaron's car keys, and we then hear a phone call from an Angela who explains how she is Josef's sister not his wife, and that Aaron needs to get out of their ASAP.

A scuffle ensues, Aaron escapes, severs ties with Josef, but receives several presents in the mail, including one final request to meet up with Aaron so that Josef can apologise. Reluctantly agreeing to this request, Aaron goes to the proposed meeting spot - an idyllic lake - on the proviso that he's recording this meeting and he's got the police on speed dial.

Oh, Aaron...

For the audience, you find yourself wincing as soon as Josef arrives and stands behind the unknowing Aaron, who's sat on a bench. It's an incredibly uncomfortable shot, that's only made further uncomfortable when Josef dons his "Peachfuzz" wolf mask, reveals an axe under his jacket, and slowly cocks the axe over his head.

The pacing of this is truly exemplary, drawing every ounce of tension out of the moment; a moment that, yes, ends with Aaron butchered.
