10 Recent And Upcoming Found Footage Horror Movies You MUST Watch
2. Paranormal Activity 8
Alongside The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity is regarded as being one of the films that popularised the found footage genre for the modern age. Released in 2007, Oren Peli's supernatural tale of a couple being terrorised by a demon was a masterclass in slow-burn terror that culminated in a nerve-shredding finale.
Paranormal Activity became a global phenomenon, spawning several sequels over the following years that expanded upon the backstory of the sinister entity Tobi. As the plot grew more convoluted, going as far as introducing time travel in later instalments, the critical reception and box office suffered as a result.
After the disappointing straight-to-streaming reboot Next of Kin in 2021, the series looks like it's about to make a massive comeback.
While the title and plot are currently unknown, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that horror legend James Wan will be producing Paranormal Activity 8 alongside Jason Blum and Oren Peli. This eighth entry will also be directed by Ian Tuason, who recently spooked audiences with Undertone. Although Tuason hasn't confirmed if his film will be a sequel or a reboot, he has teased that it will "define the found footage genre."
Paranormal Activity is set to return to the big screen in May 2027.
