10 Twisted Horror Movies That Go Way Too Far
5. mother!
It's true that not every movie has to definitively explain to the audience every single detail of the story, and while it can be a great tool to leave viewers to come to their own conclusions, there is a limit.
For example, mother! in 2017 was clearly designed to be a thought-provoking biblical allegory, but no one can seem to agree on the exact details. To take it a step further, by the end of the film, nobody had a clue what was going on at all.
The one thing that most would agree on, though, is that no matter the story or the metaphor, there was a scene towards the end that pushed things way too far. Whatever meaning that was supposed to be taken from it was overshadowed by outrage and horror.
After a bizarre chain of events saw Javier Bardem's poet gain a following that can only be described as a cult, the newborn baby of Jennifer Lawrence's character was passed around by the cult until it was ultimately killed in the chaos. The child's mother left the house to find the cult eating the baby's dead flesh, which, as should go without saying, is surely not something anyone could have thought would be a good idea to put on screen. It is scarring to watch, whether you are a parent or not.
