20 Best Found Footage Horror Movies Ever
14. The Last Broadcast
The Last Broadcast is a faux-documentary about the deaths of three TV crew members while investigating the mythic Jersey Devil in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
Much as Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler's film might sound like a craven cash-in on The Blair Witch Project, it actually premiered almost an entire year prior, yet never secured the splashy distribution that could've - and should've - made it a pop-culture staple.
The Last Broadcast benefits hugely from the technical and aesthetic plausibility of its fake-doc setup, the authenticity of its largely unknown cast, and the innately creepy nature of the Pine Barrens themselves. Today, there's a quaint charm to the film's avid engagement with the burgeoning technology of the time - particular IRC chat and primitive livestreaming - but it remains as bone-chillingly eerie now as on original release.
The wild left-turn of an ending is innately polarising - and may well have prevented it from becoming a wider hit - but it simply can't diminish The Last Broadcast's artistic achievements otherwise.
