Ma wasn't a massive hit by any means, but it did gross a solid $61.2 million against just $5 million budget in 2019, and became something of a viral hit on streaming courtesy of the many memes related to Octavia Spencer's title character.
The first film's ending leaves Ma's fate ambiguous enough that many hoped she might return for a sequel, with director Tate Taylor confirming his interest in making another Ma in 2021. But we heard basically nothing serious about Ma 2 until June 2025, when it was finally confirmed to be in development with Spencer expected to return, while Emmy-winning writer Ashley Nicole Black (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) was tapped to pen the script.
Now, in fairness, we've not had much else in the way of updates since the announcement last year, but hopefully we'll know soon enough that the script is done and everyone is gearing up to shoot the thing.
