18. Betraying The Source Material - Return to Silent Hill
When filmmaker Christophe Gans - who directed the original 2006 Silent Hill adaptation - announced that he finally got the greenlight to helm an adaptation of the second game in the series, fans were overjoyed.
After all, the 2006 film remains one of the better video game adaptations, and Gans has passionately campaigned to direct another Silent Hill movie pretty much ever since.
But what a disappointment Return to Silent Hill turned out to be, and while you can place some of the blame at the film's frustratingly low budget, it's ultimately the script - which Gans co-wrote - that's mostly responsible.
For reasons only Gans and his fellow scribes can know, they decided to make countless unnecessary deviations from the source material - all the more baffling given that Silent Hill 2 is often held up as a prime example of quality video game storytelling.
From changing the nature of the central relationship to introducing a cult that wasn't present in the game and worst of all conflating several key characters into one, Return to Silent Hill scored creative own goal after creative own goal, ensuring even most die-hard Silent Hill fans struggled to defend it.
