20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises
12. Grave Encounters Reboot
Remember Grave Encounters?
It's basically impossible to hear the found-footage film's title without picturing its grainy night vision aesthetic, and while it cost just $120,000 to produce, it grossed more than $5 million at the box office.
Though not nearly as well-regarded, Grave Encounters 2 was released the very next year and raked in more than $8 million on a budget of barely $1 million, suggesting the franchise was here to stay.
A threequel was indeed confirmed in 2015. yet ultimately never came to pass for reasons unknown. However, last September, a reboot was announced with Justin Long set to star and produce with his wife Kate Bosworth, while franchise creators The Vicious Brothers will also co-produce.
Virtually nothing is known about the movie yet, though Long and Bosworth's announcement mentioned a desire to "modernise the concept into a cinematic experience," which implies a bigger-budget theatrical take on the original micro-budget setup. With the original film having a sizable cult fanbase eager for more, and Long and Bosworth clearly being huge horror fans, this is at least going to be a reimagining that's made with passion rather than cynicism.
