20 Worst Endings In Recent Horror Movies

3. Nightbitch

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle 2025
Searchlight Pictures

Nightbitch, an adaptation of Rachel Yoder's novel of the same name, had enormous potential to be one hell of an acting showcase for Amy Adams, who plays an overworked, underappreciated mother who becomes convinced that she's turning into a dog.

But writer-director Marielle Heller ultimately toned down the more surreal and off-the-wall aspects of Yoder's novel, and this is especially, disappointingly true of its ending.

The source material ends with the mother staging a strange, gruesome performance art piece while transformed into a dog, but the film replaces this with a more demure art exhibit where the mother doesn't transform.

Seemingly in an attempt to serve up a more palatable ending for casual audiences, we're not only deprived of the transformation but the mother reunites with her husband (Scoot McNairy) with whom she has a second child, concluding the film on a strangely sentimental note relative to the story's conceptual weirdness.

Fans of the book mostly hated the changed ending, while even those entirely new to the story likely found it a bit too cloying and "Lifetime" for its own good.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
