20 Worst Endings In Recent Horror Movies

16. The Conjuring: Last Rites

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle 2025
Warner Bros.

The Conjuring: Last Rites offered up an overlong yet undercooked "conclusion" to the mainline franchise, because while you'd expect this bookending entry to really up the stakes and spectacle, it feels like a pure damp squib compared to the series' best entries.

Having the film's final boss be... a possessed mirror that spins around just isn't it, but even if you're able to get onboard with that, it's ultimately defeated far too easily with the Warren family combining their collective abilities to externalise the film's central theme: The Power of Family.

This is followed up by a cheeseball epilogue clearly intended to serve as an emotional farewell to the Warrens, as Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) attend their daughter Judy's (Mia Tomlinson) wedding.

Ed and Lorraine then dance and envision their future together, seemingly now at peace.

Wilson and Farmiga are so damn good in these roles that they can almost make this ending work, but when you remember the numerous credible allegations which paint the real-life Ed Warren as an abusive husband, this soppy, sentimental finale can't help but feel incredibly disingenuous.
