10 '90s Bands Everyone Forgets About

1. Blind Melon

Before Kurt Cobain really ignited the fire of alternative in the fall of '91, the start of the decade felt like a virtual wasteland for any new talent. While acts like Metallica and Guns N Roses were still raking in the profits of their respective releases, the thought of any major player breaking through felt almost impossible. If things had worked out differently though, we may be mentioning Blind Melon in the same breath as acts like Pearl Jam.

Having a superstar at the front with Shannon Hoon, Blind Melon were molded more in the jam band scene, even garnering modest success with the one off hit No Rain. After the allure of the Bee Girl wore off though, no one realized quite what they had on their hands here. Hoon's natural piercing register was a powerhouse in their back catalog, impressing Axl Rose so much that he asked him to sing guest vocals on the GNR song Don't Cry.

However, the fast rock and roll lifestyle ended up catching up with Hoon just before he had a chance to break through, dying of a cocaine overdose midway through a tour. Given that most of the jam band scene would be populated by acts like Dave Matthews Band and Phish in the next few years, Blind Melon remains one of the '90s best kept secrets.
