10 Albums That Will Make You Love Emo

9. Give Up - The Postal Service

For all of the albums that occupy a list like this, it's almost impossible to really nail down the core sounds of emo. There are definitely some callbacks to the punk scene from back in the day, but how do you judge that when you have songs that are a lot more poppy than the stuff off of Radio Disney? Emo is more of a state of mind, and the Postal Service knew how to channel that kind of dread even into their more glittery material.

If you listen to the kind of songs on Given Up, you're bound to find a lot more user friendly sounds, dominated by keyboards and Ben Gibbard's very non threatening voice. Taking a bit of break during his time in Death Dab for Cutie, the way Ben soars on Such Great Heights is the kind of sound that makes you feel like you're floating through the air as you're listening to it. Just be sure to check the lyrics before you actually go to sing at karaoke though.

Despite some of the songs being extremely catchy, that album title is more than just a cheeky joke, with songs that take a lot darker turn than the rest of the instruments, from people who are down on their luck or just trying to find some way to make sense of the world that turns around them. This may have been the final product that we would have gotten out of an outfit like this, but with over 2 decades under its belt, you can still feel that kind of pain right along with them.
