10 Albums That Will Make You Love Garage Rock Music

5. Raw Power - The Stooges

As the Summer of Love was dawning over in California, the rest of the '60s rock scene was getting a lot more artsy. In the wake of bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones going beyond the realm of traditional rock, you also had people like Lou Reed that started to push the envelope of what rock could be with the Velvet Underground. Those were still firmly in the rock category though, and Raw Power hit on something that's almost rock and roll anarchy.

Being born and bred in Detroit, Iggy Pop and the Stooges had always been drawn to the heavier side of rock, which ended up exploding on their third outing. Although almost any of their albums could qualify for a list like this, Raw Power seems to have a little bit of everything when it comes to the garage rock style, from the acoustic noodlings of Gimme Danger to the Little Richard style of mayhem that goes on in the back half like Shake Appeal.

There's probably a good chunk of this album that didn't even have a genre either, like Search and Destroy dipping into the hard rock flavor of music while also having the seeds of punk music rearing their head. You can say that punk didn't turn into itself until 1977, but every punk band that laid the groundwork for the genre did so because of Iggy's stage presence and the guitar thunder of James Williamson.
