10 Albums That Will Make You Love Garage Rock Music

3. Is This It - The Strokes

In the early '00s, rock and roll had really seemed to lose its way. Even if bands like Blink-182 and Korn were lighting up the charts, the sounds they were making felt so far removed from the kind of music that the old school of rock and roll was built upon. There was never that much of a buzz, until a bunch of kids from New York made the rock scene sound dangerous again.

Which is strange because the Strokes' debut record isn't necessarily one of the most original records in the world. For people who are more well versed in rock, you can tell that the band is wearing their influences on their sleeves, almost taking the Velvet Underground's aesthetic and making something a little bit more punk to fit their style. You could call them out for plagiarism if you want to, but that would be missing the point of this entire record.

Going through songs like Last Nite and Someday, the Strokes are taking those early rock and roll songs that they loved as kids and framing them in a new context, exposing a whole new generation to this sound while also reminding the old guard what made these songs so good in the first place. There's nothing wrong with a good throwback, and the songs on this record fit about as well as a pair of your favorite vintage blue jeans.
