10 Albums That Will Make You Love Prog Rock

4. Aenema - Tool

Even for being one of the more high profile bands of their kind, Tool is normally the point where most of the uninitiated prog fans have to admit defeat. They might be able to jam to a few of the riffs, but having songs that are tied into the Fibonacci sequence and go on past the 10 minute mark is a bit much sometimes. When you look at something like Aenema though, this is probably one of the funniest prog metal albums that you'll ever listen to.

Granted, it's not like the Tool that we love has gone anywhere, they just seemed to grow up as a band since Undertow, especially with Forty Six and Two getting a little more heady than normal. Outside of the more complex songs though, you also have some pretty juvenile subject matter in there, like Useful Idiot just being a bunch of static noise and A Message to Harry Manback just being some dude trolling you for a few minutes.

And the comedy bit is not even that much of a joke, like on Third Eye where they sample bits and pieces from comedian Bill Hicks and the Satanic sounding Die Eier Von Satan containing a loud German translation of a recipe for cookies. While most prog bands take themselves a little too seriously, you're half expecting the guys to go "ain't I a stinker?" halfway through things. In the case of Stinkfist though, you might want to tread lightly after listening.
