10 Albums That You Need To Listen To More Than Once

1. Remain in Light - Talking Heads

In the grand scheme of rock music, Talking Heads have pretty much trademarked their own brand of weirdly off kilter music. Even in an era as insane as the early '80s new wave, it was still hard to really get a handle on David Byrne's outlandish view of reality on albums like Fear of Music. Though the art rock might have reached its apex on Remain in Light, it's not like the songs hit you over the head right from the start.

For anyone even remotely familiar with new wave in the '80s, this was definitely a different look for this band, incorporating a lot more African rhythms and world music elements for their sound. As much as something like Once in a Lifetime may have found its way onto MTV, it was still a bit much to take in all at once. Even on some of the deeper songs like the Great Curve, it can feel like a weird fit seeing these guys take on such long song lengths to get their point across.

Then again, that's actually the point. Considering the relative immersion into world music, most of these songs aren't necessarily meant to be played to perfection, instead feeling like subtle snapshots of the band members discovering the music in real time and letting it carry them to the next level. Even with all of the new and exciting sounds on display, the character and ethos behind Talking Heads is the same as it ever was.
