6. Mew Hide A Song In Another Song

This Danish three-piece are difficult at the best of times. They don't exactly play by the established rule book, what with their mix of weird time signatures and polyrhythms with the melodic pop vocals of frontman Jonas Bjerre. Or with the naming of their albums, such as their third release proper from 2009, which is called (deep breath) No More Stories Are Told Today, I'm Sorry They Washed Away // No More Stories, The World Is Grey, I'm Tired, Let's Wash Away. It's a gorgeous record, just one that's difficult to talk about or recommend to people, unless you're better at remembering very long names than us. Also, the album features a hidden track.

Back in the day hidden tracks came after a long period of silence at the end of the album, or for a little while people played with the burgeoning CD technology by putting secret songs before the first track, with quick-witted listeners having to hit rewind as soon as the album started playing. Mew went for something a little more interesting, though: they hid a song within another song. No More Stories...opens with the lovely New Terrain, which has a bunch of weird noises going on in the background when you play the song in reverse, those weird noises reveal themselves to be a totally different song called Nervous. Which is amazing and also blows our minds because how on Earth do you come up with that, let alone pull it off?
