5. Insane Clown Posse Ain't Down With The Devil

The Detroit rap duo with a penchant for circus make up, obscure soft drink Faygo and not understanding how magnets work (nor caring) surprised their legions of fans who call themselves Juggalos, and that's really all you need to know about them when it turned out all the occult references and depictions of Hell in their lyrics weren't hinting at devil worship. Exactly the opposite, in fact; because Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are actually devout Christians, and all their songs are supposed to offer a specific lesson designed to change the "evil ways" of listeners before "the end consumes us all".

Since they directly subvert the idea of Satan as a cool guy, the backwards messages the band inserted in their songs tended to be the exact opposite of the sort that got their religious peers into a tizzy during the eighties. Instead, their 1999 LP The Amazing Jeckel brothers features...well, the first message on the track Everybody Rise played in reversed says "Yeah, if you flip this message cuz you think there's some secret message, there ain't s**t!" Which is a bit of a red herring, since Echo Side does have an actual command, and one in keeping with their religion and level of subtlety and lyrical dexterity: "F**k the Devil! F**k that s**t! We believe in life legit. If you diggin' what we say, why you throw your soul away?"
