10 Almost Perfect Grunge Albums With One Bad Song
5. Soundgarden: Ultramega OK (1988)
Soundgarden were one of the earliest Seattle bands to breakout. By the time they came to record their debut, they had a degree of big label interest, but they ultimately went with an indie studio. It's a cautionary tale about sticking to ones principles... , sometimes it can backfire.
Chris Cornell was notably dissatisfied with the production of Ultramega OK. The group had been assigned a producer who didn't really get the whole grunge scene. Many of the guitar tones got lost, and the raw energy of the group was diminished by the overly polished production. But for all that, it still gained the group recognition.
You do get the sense some tracks were written as a piss take, however. The satirically named 665 and 667, were intended to evoke the idea of cultist rituals and devil worship - an often feared feature of rock music of the era - but the joke didn't really pay off. 665 in particular just feels like the group parodying the notion of satanic rock music, with little care for how it effected the album's flow.
