10 Almost Perfect Grunge Albums With One Bad Song

4. Stone Temple Pilots: Tiny Music... Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop (1996)

Kurt Cobain's death in 1994 was the catalyst that started the decline of the grunge scene. Although many of the original grunge groups kept releasing music, many started moving away from the classic heavy sound, and incorporating more nuanced influences. Stone Temple Pilots being no exception.

By the mid '90s, Stone Temple Pilots had released a majorly successful debut and follow up album, amassing a devoted congregation of fans. Their lead singer, Scott Weiland, had also garnered a reputation for being a bad boy rabble rouser, with a penchant for getting into drug-fuelled, bust-ups. They had the makings of a rock group, alright.

Eager to keep the momentum going, but keen to keep things fresh, their third album saw them incorporate a far more lighthearted tone. Lady Picture Show sounded like they had gotten hold of a discarded concept for a Beatles track, and given it the '90s treatment. Daisy - a Ry Cooder style desert-blues ballad - feels like an odd choice for a former grunge group, but it works. But, So I Know, drifts into a weird lounge music version of the Beach Boys. Exploring new territory is great, but this latter track felt completely at odds with the Pilot's sound.
