10 Amazing Cover Songs You Need To Hear

5. Ashanti & Ja Rule - Helpless

This entry is weird, even for a cover song it's a very meta turn of events. Lin Manuel-Miranda's Broadway smash hit 'Hamilton' can best be described as a hip-hopera about the life and work of the US's first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The show is massive, with tickets to the London premiere next year selling out hours after going on sale and re-sale of tickets going for something of a small fortune. The shows tunes take inspiration from a number of places outside Broadway, notably hip-hop and R&B artists of the 90s.

Helpless is a sweet number about the meeting of Hamilton and his soon-to-be wife Eliza and is - very overtly mind - inspired by tracks by Destiny's Child, Brandy, Ashanti and Ja Rule. So how fitting that on the Hamilton Mixtape, an album of the show's best hits performed by a litany of great artists any one of which could find their way on this list, that the song inspired by Ja Rule and Ashanti is performed by Ja Rule and Ashanti. It's a very unique event where the people who inspire the song cover the song and it fits perfectly as if written for them, because in a way it is.
