10 Amazing Rock Songs Written For Movies

9. State of Love and Trust - Pearl Jam

Singles is one of those few movies where the soundtrack actually works a lot better than the actual film. Though the story for this outing is pretty much a standard romantic comedy with Matt Dillon at the helm, Cameron Crowe's assembled soundtrack is a practical who's who of the greatest alternative acts emerging from the Seattle scene in the early '90s. While everyone from Mudhoney to Soundgarden have amazing cuts on here, the real encapsulation of the Seattle sound is best represented on State of Love and Trust.

With Pearl Jam already deep into the recording process for their debut release Ten, this forceful track feels right at home playing off of Eddie Vedder's moody vocals. Whereas other bands of the time were filtering grunge through the aesthetic of metal or psychedelia, this is pretty much everything you can expect from a grunge song, complete with a catchy chorus and an almost punk-style edge to the playing.

Despite having plenty of hits on their own, Pearl Jam have still found time to dust this song off every now and again for live shows, even down to receiving a prime spot on their MTV Unplugged gig. Singles might not hold up the best as an actual movie, and yet songs like this have aged like fine wine by comparison.
