10 Astounding Albums By Landfill Indie Bands Of The '00s

2. Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngster...

At first glance they come off as just another twee pop band with too many members and an endearing mix of male and female vocals. They're so cute, the band members all use the surname Campesinos!, exclamation mark and all. A quick listen reveals they're more than that though, and Hold On Now, Youngster provides a frenzied, energetic and incredibly catchy bunch of songs. It was followed shortly after by its more or less equal - although slightly darker - We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, released the same year. The multiple instruments employed all end up in this playful whirlwind of sound, and the guitars tend to be satisfyingly crunchy. Vocals are often shouted and the lyrics are frequently cheeky or clever. These elements all mix together beautifully on the album's best tracks; lead single and album opener; Death to Los Campesinos!, with its tasty little guitar solo, the call and response vocals on My Year in Lists, and the pop epic of album highlight You! Me! Dancing! This album holds up and Los Campesinos! have went on to release a number of fantastic albums while continuously developing their sound.
