10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer
9. Scott Ian - Anthrax
It's hard to really quantify the concept of overshadowing when it comes to thrash metal. Outside of Metallica, there were never bands that were meant to be darlings on MTV or anything, and when they did you had acts like Slayer who could scare you half to death. This was the era of the big and bombastic, and somehow we looked past every member of Anthrax to make room for Scott Ian.
Throughout the band's history, Scott has always been the anchor of the entire project, making sure that everything is in its right place and giving a solid foundation on the rhythm side of things. While he might never play any lead licks or anything, the power just comes from his right hand, making for long series of downpicked notes that align perfectly with what Charlie Benante is doing behind the kit.
And it's also hard to look away from Ian sometimes given the specific facial hair that he sports, having a gigantic beard coming out of his chin. Throughout the eras of Joey Belladona and John Bush, there was never really a question of whether Anthrax was going to end up falling behind. When you have someone like Scott pumping out the riffs, it's not a matter of not having the material. It's a matter of trying to keep up with him half the time.
