10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer

7. Brian Wilson - The Beach Boys

When the rock world started to get a lot more psychedelic, it felt like the Beach Boys should have been on the way out. As soon as the hippy movement started to take hold of the mainstream, the kind of care free surfer dude persona that Mike Love sold to all of us made them look like a bunch of prep boys. And while there's a lot that's been said about Mike being that same preppy ass*ole all grown up, Brian Wilson was always in the back trying to paint his masterpiece.

Granted, it's hard to really narrow the Beach Boys down to just one lead singer, but Mike Love has always been known as the fun in the sun leader of the group. Without Brian Wilson's mad genius behind the scenes though, there would be no chance of us hearing about their legacy these days. Even when Mike told Brian to not mess with the formula they set for themselves, Wilson doubled down on the experimental side and managed to create Pet Sounds, which is still the pinnacle for pop music today.

Whereas most songwriters would have just found a theme and stuck with it, Brian was always curious to see where his muse would take him, either bringing in weird instruments like a theremin or making his way through different keys without a care in the world. The surf music side of the band was always going to be fun, but Brian's knack for songwriting is what's kept the good vibrations going for years now.
