10 Bands That Invented Their Own Genre
6. Ramones
The rock scene has done a good job in trying to forget the wasteland that was the mid '70s. For as many great acts like Aerosmith and Deep Purple were still thriving at the time, you could see the pompousness of rock and roll slowly start to creep into the fray. At a time when rock had forgotten where it came from, a bunch of misfits out of New York brought the entire scene back down to Earth.
With the release of the Ramones' debut record, the world got its first real taste of punk rock. Whereas other bands like the Sex Pistols may have been making the rounds at the same time over in England, the Ramones were the first of their kind to actually turn it into a style of music. Instead of the traditional big riffs and confrontational lyrics, these were just pop songs played with mountains of attitude, complete with song lengths that would be too long if they breached the 3 minute mark.
Though the Ramones never got to make millions on the same level as their counterparts, literally everyone who were graced with their presence ended up forming a band, be it Green Day, the Clash, or Sonic Youth. The time for wankery was over...just count to four and let it rip.
