10 Bands That Invented Their Own Genre

5. Jane's Addiction

Most rock fans could almost feel the Earth move once the alternative boom started to spread across the world. After Nirvana had first lit a fire under the belly of teenagers everywhere, that opened the door for a lot more off-the-wall acts to come to the forefront. Whereas an act like the Red Hot Chili Peppers may get the credit for bringing funk rock to the masses, that classic combination actually goes back a few more years.

Though you could find the building blocks of funk rock in something like Faith No More from around the same time, Jane's Addiction was the first of their kind to really wear their funk influences on their sleeve. Across albums like Nothing's Shocking and Ritual de Habitual, these songs sounded like a distorted version of something you'd hear at a James Brown concert. Look no further than a song like Been Caught Stealing, whose ripping lead lines from Dave Navarro sound like they fit somewhere between a horn section and a Jimmy Page lead break.

These guys should also be given credit for kickstarting the alternative movement as a whole, with Perry Farrell going on to found the massive festival circuit known as Lollapalooza. Even with all of the accolades at their feet, Jane's Addiction is the one band who probably deserves to be much more famous than they are.
