10 Bands That Never Topped Their 1st Album
3. Boston
Whenever a boomer drops the term classic rock, it's hard not to immediately think of Boston's first album.
Their debut sent them right to the top of the pile of bands named after American cities. Nothing Chicago or Kansas put out could possibly top this front-to-back classic. The first five songs were all released as singles and the remaining three are all considered among their best.
The band originally formed as an outlet for the demos of guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz, but in lead singer Brad Delp, the band had someone who could hit the type of high notes that could take any sporting event to the next level.
Musicians loved the album's sound and tried in vain to imitate its crystal clear production, while legions of fans forked out for more than 25 million copies worldwide. At the time, it made it the best-selling debut in US history.
The band's second album, Don't Look Back, is almost as brilliant in its pristine competence, but song-for-song it is not the equal of its predecessor. Selling seven million copies doesn't hurt, though.
If you've blasted the self-titled debut album before lacing up a crisp pair of white New Balance sneakers and mowing a lawn, you can say you've lived.
