10 Bands That Stole Another Band's Sound
4. Pearl Jam To Stone Temple Pilots
At the dawn of the ‘90s grunge movement, you couldn’t escape bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana from tearing up the charts.
No matter which radio station you were on, chances are something from the rainy city of Seattle would find its way across your dial. Just when it seemed like the next new Pearl Jam album would be great, fans were up in arms when they found out someone else had tried to pull from Eddie Vedder’s songbook.
The song in question was “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots, which featured loud guitars with the right amount of distortion and Scott Weiland droning on in a nasally style way too reminiscent of Vedder’s yarl.
While most casual rock fans took it with a grain of salt, the Seattle grunge community were absolutely furious at this new band. Since they came from the beaches of San Diego, what the hell would they know about the tortured Seattle sound?
Even though things started pretty tense, STP ended up becoming one of the biggest names in the alternative movement, quickly moving on from the grunge sound to a more conventional hard rock approach and even glam rock stylings on albums like Tiny Music…
Stone Temple Pilots deserve to be in the conversation of the greatest bands of the ‘90s, but when getting the ball rolling, they were public enemy #1 for any grunge purist.
