10 Beatles Songs Not Written By The Beatles

1. All Apologies - Nirvana

Nirvana was the kick in the ass that rock and roll still hasn’t recovered from. While most rock fans were still basking in the everglow of the hair metal revolution, Kurt Cobain came out with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and brought the entire alternative music scene to the top. After that first success though, things started to get pretty dark.

Going into In Utero, Cobain had gotten ugly, with songs like “Scentless Apprentice” and “Milk It” being some of the most uncommercial moments of the band’s career. However, he did have one trick up his sleeve for the final song “All Apologies.” Starting with a simple guitar riff leading the way, this song is where Kurt turned to his childhood heroes for inspiration, with one of the most perfect pop melodies he would ever write. Though the song does have sad connotations as being about one of the darker times in Cobain’s life, the bittersweet beauty of his vocal lines are too poignant to be ignored.

As if the Beatles worship wasn’t clear enough at this point, Cobain even ends the final chorus of the song with a “yeah yeah yeah” refrain that seems to echo the Beatles’ “She Loves You.” You can tell that Cobain was trying to hide his pop influences in a grungy haze, but that musical light ends up shining through every time.
