8. Something About Us - Discovery
If there was any one word to describe Daft Punk's music, it normally comes down to being synthetic. In retrospect, the cyborg outfits couldn't have been any more apt for these producers, given that so much of their sound is the stuff that musical robots would actually make. Then again, who's to say that robots can't have a heart?
In the middle of their masterpiece Discovery, Something About Us is one of the more heartfelt things that Daft Punk has been involved with, as the vocoded lyrics talk about the devotion that you have to your soulmate. Though the vocals and keyboards are the star of the show here, the actual pulse of this song comes courtesy of the bassline, which lays on top of everything and provides the perfect pulse. The effect is almost like hearing a heartbeat in between all of the wires of a robot.
Even if this was eventually made to accompany the duo's film Interstella 5555, the track works just as well when used outside of the alien rock band context, as if time has slowed down in the middle of the club to profess your innermost feelings. While the rest of Daft Punk's discography is about bringing nothing but unstoppable dance grooves, they can still make you have the feels when they want to.
