10 Best Diss Tracks In Hip Hop
1. No Vaseline - Ice Cube (1991)
Walking away from the biggest West Coast group was one hell of a bold move from Ice Cube. The dissolution of N.W.A. was far from a clean break. Ice Cube left in '89 after feeling undercut by both Eazy-E (head of Ruthless Records) and Jerry Heller (the group's manger). The royalties he received for Straight Outta Compton didn't reflect his contributions to the record's lyrics.
Cube's disdain extended to both Dr. Dre and DJ Yella after they opted to remain in the group. He made his feelings felt in full force with No Vaseline. It's without a doubt one of the most bouncing tracks from the '90s. But aside from the beat, Cube delivered another classically ferocious collection of verses. He spat the truth how he saw it. Cube's flow didn't let up for a moment. Each and every grievance was laid up and shot down.
No other rapper could make "bozos" sound intimidating, but Cube used the word to devastating effect. He insinuated that both Yella and Dre were being taken advantage of by Jerry Heller. "No Vaseline" made reference to how brutally they were being f**ked out of their money. The vicious stream of consciences coming out of Cube solidified him as one of the greats.
