10 Best Hard Rock Albums Since 2010
4. Muse - Drones
Across their run in the 2000's, Muse had taken a lot of strides away from their rock roots to flirt with other musical styles. From the classical leanings sides of The Resistance to The 2nd Law's dives into electronic music, you couldn't pin down what the band was going to do next.
Once the band hooked up with modern recording legend Mutt Lange, they ventured into the studio to create one of the most rocking albums of their career. Drones is an album that is go-for-the-throat rock throughout its runtime, with gritty condemnations of war on "Psycho" to the all-out metal assault of "Reapers." Centered around a dystopian future where the world is run by drones, the album's softer moments show the devastation that comes with violence on the acapella outro track and the ballad "Aftermath." Even the band's flirtations with other styles work incredibly well with their rock edge like on the electronic wash of "Mercy" or the layered Queen-esque vocals of "Defector."
Rather than leap into unknown territory, Drones presents Muse at their most...well...Muse. Simply put, this album is the sound of the band taking all of their greatest artistic strengths and layering them into a tight, concentrated musical package.
