9. KEN Mode - Blessed

Off the back of the cold harshness of 2013's Entrench, noise rock three-piece KEN Mode made a return just this month with their follow-up album, Success. The album maintains the band's key influences like Black Flag and their more contemporary counterparts like the equally brilliant Pissed Jeans, best showcased on the dirge driven single 'Blessed'.

The song rumbles and pops emphatically from the speakers courtesy of legendary soundboard wizard Steve Albini, with as much focus on restraint as there is on the raucous moments. This tight give and take that the song hinges on creates a wonderful clashing between the tense spoken word verses and the glass breaking, wall of guitars chorus.

The song is a perfect example of a band who have matured and know how they want to sound without removing the shambolic unpredictability that made songs like 'The Terror Pulse' off of Entrench such enthralling and dangerous pieces of music.

KEN Mode somehow find a new way to explore the depths of the lower ends of the musical scale on 'Blessed', one where complete control and complete mayhem are just a note away from each other.
