10 Best Hard Rock Music Videos Of The 2010s
3. MOTHER – IDLES (2017)
This was another great music video with a very simple concept.
Joe Talbot has been outspoken about his distain for toxic masculinity. This guy is no stranger to suffering; at a young age he became the care giver to his mother, and in 2015 he lost a daughter during childbirth. If there's any message IDLES preach with their music, it's to not bottle things up.
This video is filled with great imagery. Joe Talbot looks like your typical tough guy, but sidles into frame dressed in a pink suit - already a subversion of the idea of masculinity. The lyrics speak of the anger he felt in the wake of his mother's death and the injustice of the class system.
Talbot stands in front of a table filled with a plethora of fine china - the symbols of decadence. As Joe aggressively spits out his anti establishment lyrics, he proceeds to smash the objects on the floor. With each line of pent up aggression, he exercises his rage through the destruction of these symbols of wealth.
The images of Talbot smashing the china are intercut with footage of him and his band mates adorned in pink dresses and acting just as wild as you would imagine.
Maybe they should change the expression to 'punk in a china shop'.
