4. J-Zone - "Fish-N-Grits"

Kanye West The Life Of Pablo
Old Maid Entertainment

J-Zone is the best rapper/producer you’ve never heard of. A staunch traditionalist and champion of classic analog recording techniques, the 17-year veteran keeps his sound grounded in New York’s boom-bap traditions, peppered with off-beat character and humorously cynical lyrical styles.

“Fish-N-Grits” might be his best work yet. J-Zone delivers tongue-in-cheek social commentary, wistful childhood memories and scathing attacks on the state of the rap industry over classic, dusty productions. The beats blend samples with live drums, organs and guitars, proving J-Zone’s status of a master craftsman behind the boards and on the mic.

Outspoken, creative, and as capable as anyone else in the game, it’s tragic that J-Zone’s obvious talents haven’t manifested as success and record sales. Check “Fish-N-Grits” out - it deserves your attention.
