5. It Might Get Loud
The Rolling Stone calls It Might Get Loud 'a guitar fanatic's version of The Hours; "an ambitious examination of three colourful characters that crossed decades and artistic styles." And this is exactly why the film is not your average rock documentary; in fact, there are few others like it. So many focus too much on the antics behind the music or the excess, often alienating non-hardcore fans of their subject altogether. It Might Get Loud explores the refreshingly unglamorous stories behind where it all started for Jack, U2's The Edge and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. Directed by Davis Guggenheim, the film features Jack showing the others how to play White Stripes classic 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground', reflecting on how he lived without a bed as a teenager so he could fit his instruments and equipment in his room, and even building a guitar from a piece of wood and a bottle. It's an inspiring reminder that behind the fame, the personas and the legendary music that sounds so effortless, there's a pure devotion to the craft of playing guitar.
