10 Best Music Videos Of The 90s

2. Vogue - Madonna

Directed by David Fincher (!!), Vogue hit the screens in 1990, catapulting Madonna into the '90s and securing what would become her place near the top of many 'Best Video' lists for decades to come. The music video for Vogue has been ranked behind only Thriller by Michael Jackson as the greatest music video of all time.

It owes a lot to the Golden Age of Hollywood, with many of the female icons of years gone by either depicted or name-dropped in the course of the video. The style of dance itself was adopted from the ball culture of New York's gay scene, helping to bring this sub-culture into the mainstream.

The video features not only Madonna, but many of the dancers from her then-upcoming Blonde Ambition tour. It was premiered on MTV on March 29, 1990, while also premiering on BET in November of that year, making it the first Madonna video to air on an African-American channel.

Many of the scenes in the video are reproductions of photographs by the famed photographer Horst P. Horst, who was less than pleased that Madonna used his images without either his permission or acknowledging him.

The video features a controversial sheer lace dress that resulted in a stand-off between MTV and Madonna, the latter of whom won when she refused to edit the scene out. There is also a shot of her iconic cone bra as well. It is her fourth video with over 100 million streams online, making her the first female artist with four videos over 100 million views in the streaming age.
