10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 2000s
6. Backspacer - Pearl Jam
After achieving three US number ones in the 90s, Pearl Jam left it right to the last minute to bag their one and only top spot of the noughties, with an album that hit shelves in 2009.
When asked about the album Backspacer, frontman Eddie Vedder said that it was a more positive record than fans might have come to expect, something he attributed to the recent election of President Barack Obama.
Considering how bad it would get in a few years, he was right to enjoy it while it lasted.
This chirpier sound clearly resonated with American audiences at the time, who enjoyed Backspacer's mix of full-on bangers and emotional ballads. Critics also rallied around it, with many labelling it a return to form for the grunge icons.
The public dusted off their chequebooks for Pearl Jam, sending the album to number one for a single week in October. This was the band's first trip to the peak since 1996, and everyone was pleased to see them back.
Well, except for maybe the people who they kept off the top spot. They probably weren't very happy.
