5. The Stone Roses (1989)
Towards the end of the '70s, groups like Joy Division were creating a bleak but appealing brand of post-punk rock, as a reaction to the impoverished state of the UK. A decade later, bands were channeling their frustrations into a distinctly and defiantly, joyful form of new music.
Opening up with I Wanna Be Adored, and ending with Fools Gold, this album is a delicious sandwich of musical brilliance. Tracks like She Bangs the Drum, Waterfall and Made of Stone act as the filling, leaving all your musical cravings satisfied.
For an album that boldly aimed to fuse rock with dance music, it seemed like an effortlessly simple task for these musicians. John Squire's guitar parts couldn't sound more psychedelic if they were played by Hendrix himself; Reni's drumming and Mani's bass playing, both infused an undeniable dance groove into the music; and Ian Brown's vocals were suitably distant and dreamlike, for an acid house inspired take on rock.
Margaret Thatcher might have been making life hard, but at least the music scene was bangin'.
