6. Chocolate – Music For Cars EP/The 1975 (2013)
‘Chocolate’ was the first big single for The 1975. Initially released as part of the Music for Cars EP in March 2013, it was also included on the band’s debut album later that year.
With its combination of funky, palm-muted guitar riffs and the catchy vocal melody, ‘Chocolate’ is an accessible pop song that will get stuck in your head immediately. The track is essentially one massive hook from start to finish, and as such, it’s easy to understand why it’s so popular.
Lyrically, the song addresses small-town boredom, recreational drug use, and spending time with mates. In this sense, ‘Chocolate’ isn’t particularly deep, but given how poppy the instrumental is, this is probably a good thing.
Seven years on from its release, ‘Chocolate’ is still one of the main highlights of a live show. It’s a terrific song to sing along to (provided you can understand Healy’s accent), and it’s destined to become a classic in the future.
