10 Best Songs By The 1975
5. Sex – Sex EP (2012)
‘Sex’ is one of the heaviest songs by The 1975. The guitars are front and centre and the more electronic side of the band is pushed to the periphery.
In line with the gritty tone of the guitars, the lyrics aren’t particularly glamourous. Healy describes attraction and romantic interactions with a sense of disillusionment rather than excitement. And this sense of weariness is heightened even more by the song’s loose structure.
Yet there’s still a distinctive hook. 'She's got a boyfriend anyway' acts as a miniature chorus that repeats throughout the song, and such a line is perfect for crowds to sing along to during live shows.
‘Sex’ was also included on the band’s self-titled album, but the EP version is the superior tune. It’s rugged, emotive, and much more powerful.
