10 Biggest Album Flops In Rock History
9. Hot Space - Queen
At the start of the '80s, Queen had done something almost none of their peers could: change with the times.
As opposed to the other hard rock bands struggling to adapt to the age of MTV, these hard rock monarchs strutted onto the scene like seasoned veterans, with Freddie Mercury trying his hand at everything from funk rock to old time Elvis-style rock and roll. However, the one thing that put them back on top did end up coming back to bite them.
Seeing how the band's last single was the chart-dominating Another One Bites the Dust, their next record Hot Space seems like a deliberate attempt to cash in on that song's willpower. From one track to the next, this record just sounds like the band trying to make lightning strike twice, with songs like Back Chat using the same syncopated vocal approach that was already used on the previous albums.
Aside from the huge crossover smash with David Bowie on Under Pressure, the rest of Hot Space sounds like these guys had about half of a record finished but wanted to just settle with the leftover scraps from their disco episode. There's certainly nothing wrong with copying the formula, but you have to make sure that formula has staying power before you actually go through with it.
