10 Bold Predictions For Heavy Metal In 2018

8. Nu Metal Will Become Cool Again

From 1996 to 2003, nu metal was the movement in rock ‘n’ roll. Inhabiting the interim between grunge and metalcore, it was a style that saw extreme music evolve with the times by incorporating seven-string guitars, DJ’s, pop/hip-hop inspiration and alien melodies and techniques.

And while the genre would lose its way in the mid-2000s, there's been something of a renaissance.

By 2017, new nu metal was a big deal once again, cemented by Suicide Silence’s Deftones-esque self-titled album, Motionless in White’s Graveyard Shift, Marilyn Manson’s Heaven Upside Down and the dawn of the incendiary King 810. And, in 2018 – like it or not – the movement will only get bigger. Not only is Cane Hill’s sophomore album Too Far Gone going to be amazing, but bands like Machine Head and Soulfly are already hinting at returning to a more primal, nu metal-inspired approach.

And, who knows, with word spreading that a new Slipknot album could be happening sooner rather than later, 2018 could very well set the foundation for nu metal becoming a dominant force in rock ‘n’ roll once more. It won’t be powerful enough to drown out today’s extreme and post-modern underground, but it could still be huge all the same.
