10 Brilliant Cover Versions Of Classic Songs

5. Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons

Originally recorded by: Nena

In 1983, German artist Nena recorded her breakout hit 99 Luftballons (later re-recorded in English as 99 Red Balloons). It’s a sprightly and bouncy pop number full of slap bass and shiny synths that just happens to feature a deeply dark and post-apocalyptic subject matter.

More than a decade later, Californian punk rockers Goldfinger released their skate punk classic Superman. Goldfinger also recorded one of the most unlikely punk covers you could imagine and in an even more unlikely turn of events, they absolutely smashed it. Those catchy synth lines from the original are turned into a thundering punk rock riff, interspersed with screaming solos and booming bass drops. They even throw in an all-German verse for good measure.

Possibly the best punk cover ever recorded.
