10 Classic Albums That NO ONE CARED ABOUT
1. Hunky Dory - David Bowie
There was probably a good contingency of rock fans who honestly believed that David Bowie was a space alien who happened to know how to play rock and roll. Compared to some of the more off the wall acts coming out around the same time, records like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane were all-out gamechangers, setting the tone for the glam rock bangers that would become a mainstay in the coming years. Before that though, Bowie was actually dangerously close to becoming a one hit wonder.
Though Hunky Dory is heralded as the first truly great Bowie record, it did next to nothing on the charts. Still trying to find his niche sound after Space Oddity, Bowie's return to the world of art rock make for some of the most hard hitting songs he had written to date, including Changes and the mammoth showstopper Life on Mars?. As essential as this album is to rock music as a whole, it only seemed to look good after the arrival of the alien we know and love.
While not selling all that well during its initial run, the pure bombast of Ziggy Stardust's namesake record just a year later made everyone stand up at attention and focus on what they were missing all these years. In fact, almost every one of Bowie's earlier records got a massive boost in sales, with Hunky Dory being treated as the start of his first classic period. Then again, if you have a record that is this good, sometimes it just sells itself without having to try all that hard.
