10 Classic Rock Acoustic Songs
4. Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones
At the beginning of the '70s, the Rolling Stones had really started to grow up. Though they may have spent the majority of the early '60s being one of the greatest blues bands of the British Invasion, albums like Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers saw them looking towards a more rootsy form of rock, from the swagger of Brown Sugar to the strange samba coming from Sympathy for the Devil. If you wanted to know what the Stones' jaded heart looked like though, we got a peek behind the curtain on Wild Horses.
Written during the height of Keith Richards' country phase, this is one of the purest love songs that the Stones have ever committed to tape. Instead of the usual sexual tension you would find in something like Let's Spend the Night Together, the pair in this song almost feel like two wayward spirits trying to find each other, as Mick Jagger tries to buy her heart only to come up empty handed.
There does seem to be some higher calling to this traveler though, as he looks to do some living with his betrothed after they've long since left this plain of existence. Even with a heart as dark as the Stones, songs like Wild Horses are proof that the greatest partnerships can last more than a lifetime.
