10 Classic Rock Bands That Never Made A Bad Album

4. Tom Petty

Any good rock and roll ends up coming from the Heartland. After all, the evolution of rock and roll in the very beginning was always raised down south, so why shouldn't it's main exports be any different? Though the Southern Accent may be strong with Tom Petty, his love for rock and roll never failed him throughout his time on this Earth.

Whereas other heartland rockers of Petty's ilk like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp have dips and valleys throughout their career, Petty's trajectory seemed to only go up since the '70s. If you're talking the titans of rock and roll, not many can claim to have made hits in the '70s, '80s, and '90s respectively, which led to Tom reaching his evergreen period a lot smoother than his counterparts. Granted, some help from Jeff Lynne and George Harrison certainly didn't hurt either, being a prime force behind hits like Free Fallin and the offshoot supergroup the Traveling Wilburys.

Side projects aside, Petty still had the songwriting power to hold his own next to his heroes, with Wildflowers being one of the best folk rock albums of the modern age. Even when rock faded from the spotlight towards the 2010's, albums like Mojo and Hypnotic Eye showed Tom putting more miles on his soul and getting even bluesier in his old age. While most bands like to be rock filtered through a specific lens, this is about as pure as rock and roll can get.
