10 Classic Rock Bands That Released 5 Great Albums In A Row
8. The Who Sell Out to Quadrophenia - The Who
Out of all the great bands of the '60s, the Who were the one group who grew up the fastest. While other acts like Cream and the Yardbirds took their time with expanding their musical horizons, these four punks from the Mod scene seemed to take rock in different directions across every single record. Though it was all about the single in the beginning, Pete Townshend started to get conceptual by their third release.
Released as a goof on pirate radio stations, The Who Sell Out was the group's first foray into a full-fledged concept, complete with commercial jingles and epic singles like "I Can See For Miles." However, the more ambitious projects were right around the corner, with Tommy being the first widely received rock opera which has since been adapted into everything from a movie to a Broadway show.
Even when working outside of the concept idea, Who's Next showed that even their one-off singles were better than most band's best material. By the time they had invented the hard rock live album with Live at Leeds, the band finally undertook their most ambitious concept yet with Quadrophenia, which earned them even more accolades from the rock faithful. By breaking the confines of the rock format, Townshend showed that this little style of rock music can move you to your very core.
